Whenever someone asks me what car I have, I always say "a crappy little scion" is that weird that I don't want people to know what I drive? Not because I am paranoid, I just don't want to tell them.

I drive a 2000 VW New Beetle.

I tell people what I drive when they ask. I immediately can categorize people into people who judge me and assume that I can't know cars, or to people who accept that you can't just judge a person based on one point of data.

Does it have anything to do with badge shame?

It's alright, because that's just more proof that you are in fact Indian Takumi.

I am okay with the badge. I just don't like to tell them because people either respond in one of two ways. A) oh what's that? B) oh did your parents buy it, which I would like to point out isn't true(kind of I bought 1/2 of it and will slowly pay back my parents)

You could go with 'I drive a hybrid'.

They won't know you mean hybrid Toyota/Subaru.

Tell them you drive:

A dog sled

A herd of cattle

A hovercraft

Anything else you can think of...

I DD a 2005 Euro-spec Diesel Corolla (E12) 3dr hatchback. About 1,250 kg/2,750 lbs, a die-hard 2.0l 4-cyl. common-rail Diesel with 116 hp/280 Nm. Very sensible ... and still I somehow enjoy driving it (sometimes like a looney).

It does not have too much in common with the U.S. Corolla that attracts so much hate from Jalops for being the embodiment of beige ... still, once prompted to name the kind of car I drive, I think "Toyota Corolla" and instantly imagine people shaking their heads in disapproval.

There's quite a few decent cars that seem to have shitty karma. Think New Beetle, Boxster, Prius, Cayenne, Mercedes R-Class. Lexus' RX. Non-AMG Mercedes SL.

Im worried people will hear 'prelube' when i tell them. And that conversation will undoubtedly get much more awkward.

Why dont you just call it a gt86. Or a toyota. Though its not weird, sometimes you want to unknown, its a feel i can understand.

I hate telling people because I feel like they are going to look at me and go, "Oh you drive a sports car. . . does it go fast" It happened at work, then I stopped parking by my coworkers. That and the fact that they probably don't know what an FR-S is

Not judging as long as you drive it in reverse so it's rear-engine, rear-wheel drive like its namesake. :)

Kinja'd!!!0

Are you implying you want to race but cant get over the fear of actually doing it?

And rule of thumb. Dont play with mustangs. We drive imports from the land of the rice. They drive brute force pulling mules. We wont beat them from a dig. They never want to go from a roll. And mustang guys just want to show off how good their mustang is.

Plus its easy to do the numbers in our head. We (since we both have 200hp) will lose.

See that is what is annoying. It isn't about the speed it is about the fun! I guess different people different mind sets. Some mustang owners don't care about beating us ricers, others do. All depends. Luckily, I have never been asked to race(besides the BMW who had 20some year olds tailgating me home), even if I was, I wouldn't do it. partly because I am going to lose and the other part, it is stupid.

Id rather do a point to point follow the leader type run and swap positions on a run back. Who can keep up with who. Speed isnt everything. (at least thats what we tell ourselves haha, because we have little ponies)

Racing is very variable. There are times, and then there are not times to do it (which is most of the time). But when and if you do it, make sure no one is around, you are comfortable with the car and driver youre racing. And acknowledge the fact you are putting at minimum, yourself and your car in danger. If you feel the risk factor is high, then what would be the difference between racing, and doing a 0-100mph pull from a light on a highway at midnight, alone. In certain circumstances, i feel its no more dangerous than the stuff we do on our own. Also, i accept the fact i may get a ticket for my behavior. I wont be upset, ill accept that they got me.

The only two times i 'raced' was with my buddy and his miata, we just did a little 3rd gear pull to kinda see whos car really was faster. And the other, i tried to do a 3rd pull against my buddies celica gts, but he's stupid and doesnt know that you countdown when you want to go.... But both situations, we were alone, on the highway, with no oncomming or flowing traffic. I felt fine because really, we topped out at maybe 80mph? before i pulled away from them. And 80 is pretty much the speed everyone travels normally around here.

Call me stupid. But i took into consideration a lot of things. And it was a calculated risk. But i dont think id race a random person. I like to know who im driving next to if i were to do that. And racing beyond 100mph, becomes highly questionable. I havent even touched that number on my own to be honest.

Well you were doing that with friends. I raced my friend in his 1997 T-bird. With all 140hp and my 200hp. We had a good time, even though it was possibly the worst race ever. No I am talking about like when someone comes up to you trying to prove how fast their car is. Only problem is the following picture:

Kinja'd!!!

And I have gone speeding all the time, generally it is at night, and it is usually up into 3rd which is about 70mph. I completely understand if I get a ticket, except I try my hardest not to. Also back road driving is dangerous as well.

And if you are thinking what I am thinking(backroad driving) then that seems like fun, if you know the other person but never cross the line!
